Onwards to Bonito
From Passo do Lontra in the Pantanal we drove 4 hours south to a town basically in the middle of nowhere called Bonito. Bonito is a fairly young town that has grown totally out of tourism. What everyone comes to see and experience is their array of waterfalls, springs, rivers and caves. The water here is high in Calcium bio-carbonate apparently which gives it a beautiful turquoise colour.
Straight after we arrived we headed straight for an outing of 7 different waterfalls at a farm nearby (something ´da Cachoeiras?). Because everything is geared around tourism the whole experience was so well organised, you walk along wooden paths through the forest and visit each fall one by one. One of them had a ´zip-line` but to us Saffas is a ´foofy(?) slide. That was pretty cool although it could´ve been a bit higher and gone on for longer.
The next day we did the famous snorkel along one of the freshwater rivers that winds its way through the dense forest. Just like the day before, we were yet again greeted with a harsh electrical storm and some heavy rain but its so hot here that it was never really an issue. The river is packed with pretty large fish that are not at all fazed by you swimming past, one of the types, Dorado are particularly big.
Other highlights in Bonito were the waterfall at the back of our campsite for cooling off in after a long day and the massive Tarantula in the mens toilets on the second night.
We have the photos of the snorkelling down the river on DVD.
